Please give details of why you consider this ‘Main Modification’ to be unsound in accordance with the tests above (if applicable)? The deletion of the criterion removing the requirement for development not to impact on the wider landscape and/or countryside setting is considered to be a retrograde step and it is considered that there is no justification for its removal and it should be retained. We are particularly concerned that the proposal as worded would allow for residential development of rear gardens in houses ‘close to existing built up confines’ in the villages of Challock, Charing, Chilham and Wye that lie either within or within the setting of the Kent Downs AONB. There are instances of houses with large gardens close to the built up confines of the villages where residential development would be wholly out of keeping with the settlement pattern of these areas where new residential development would not conserve or enhance the AONB and/or its setting. We therefore consider it all the more important that policy HOU5 is amended to exclude development ‘close to the built confines’ in these settlements.
