The County Council recognises that the Borough Council has commissioned Sustrans to complete a route assessment of all the central Ashford cycle routes and this will be used to further update the adopted Ashford Cycle Strategy and inform future network development. It is advised that the Borough Council continues to work in close partnership with KCC, Tenterden Town Council, local parishes, cycle user groups, planners, developers and residents to identify additions and improvements to the cycle

I am delighted that there is the intention to develop cycle and pedestrian routes, to encourage the use such transport instead of the private car.

CPRE supports this policy, and notes that it is essential that this policy supports the Cycle Strategy. There is no indication of the content of the cycle strategy, no mention of land that should be safeguarded for the delivery key routes, nor any mention of challenges to its delivery. The policy wording does indicate the intention to proactively deliver cycling benefits from new development, but the relationship to the strategy should be clear.

We welcome the promotion of walking and cycling routes, and hope you will extend this promotion to Newenden parish. Because of its location, Newenden serves as an important junction for traffic from and to Hawkhurst and Sandhurst in Tunbridge Wells borough, as well as Northiam in Rother district. Although these areas are not within Ashford's scope, we hope you will not forget about our footpaths and cycle paths.

This document refers to National Cycle Route 18, but fails to refer to National Cycle Route 17 which also passes through Ashford. As shown on KCC's interactive maps, this runs from west of Ashford, enters the town through Goat Lees, then via Trinity Road and through Bybrook to link with NC 18 at Kinney's Lane. It was originally conceived as part of "The Pilgrims Way Cycle Trail". The route is particularly relevant to proposed housing and commercial development at Eureka Park.

The policy specifically refers to National Cycle Route 18, but does not refer to the ambition put forward during planning of Conningbrook Lakes to improve routing of the cycle route through Little Burton and re-route through Conningbrook Lakes to take advantage of the new park.
