Water Resources and Efficiency
Whilst the County Council welcomes the provision of Policy ENV7: Water Efficiency, it is advised that consideration is also given to water efficiency in commercial properties. Roof areas of commercial buildings are often large in relation to total water consumption and rainwater harvesting systems can provide a very effective and cost beneficial solution to reducing the demands on the public water supply system.

Overall we are pleased to note that matters of interest to us have been addressed and as such we consider the sound. We do however, have a few comments to make and suggested amendments for clarification purposes.

This is sound; but could new developments be built with water harvesting apparatus as standard? This would be green and would save the new owners money on their water bills as well as saving use of a vital raw material. Maybe developers could promote this as a selling point!

Kent has been declared an area of severe water stress by the Environment Agency. As such, CPRE supports the Council's proposal to adopt the lower 'optional' requirement of 110l/p/day for new residential development.

The Draft Local Plan Policy ENV7 also requires development to incorporate design features which will reduce water consumption. Following the introduction of the optional technical standards as set out above, water consumption is to be dealt with through the Building Regulations.
